"Skip Along"

by Arthur Lange and his Orchestra

This merry tune was co-written by Neil Moret (the same guy who co-wrote the evergreen "She's Funny That Way", posted in my archives) along with Ben Black in early 1924. It seems to have been only been put on wax one other time - for Edison by Harry Raderman - and, of the two, only Cameo's recording was released. This version, by Arthur Lange's band, was recorded on January 25 of 1924. The arrangement is worth noting - the reed and brass sections have some "call and answer" dialogs of the kind pioneered by Fletcher Henderson, though in a cruder form here, and it is not often that a banjo gets the solo break toward the end - it is a good example of what made Cameo sides more exciting than the more conservative recordings by other labels. This particular copy had been through a lot in its life, so there was static to tame - noise reduction has not elimitated all of it, but the surface is quieter than before and the recording is now enjoyable as it was back in the day.
