Ted Bartell played trumpet in the Paul Whiteman band (before Bix was hired) and, starting sometime in 1927, began playing with a band of his own (thanks to Tom Hennessey for that information). The recording, done for Velvet-Tone in 1928, is an
interesting one: it is one of the last acoustic sides, putting the recording process behind the times, yet the arrangement is years ahead of what was being played by other orchestras. The Jolson-esque vocal is credited to "Tom Frawley" on the
label, which is one of the many pseudonyms for Irving Kaufman (thanks to Michael Foltz for providing that nugget of info). The tune, written by Niel Moret and Richard Whiting, is still a jazz standard. The disc got played a lot, and starts to show
groove stress toward the end, but even then it's not too noisy to enjoy. (Lyrics for this song have been provided on-line by Easy Listening MIDI.)
