"Open Your Arms My Alabamy"

by Zez Confrey and his Orchestra

If there are still record collectors who ascribe to the idea that Edison records are not as "hot" as their contemporaries, a side-by-side comparison of this Victor record to the Kaplan's Melodists version posted elsewhere in the archives might be in order. It was recorded six weeks before the Edison release, on November 10 of '22, and is quite subdued compared to Kaplan's arrangement. Mind you, Zez's band was playing conservative arrangements overall, and this piece suits the niche that the Confrey band made for themselves: no solos, just big band dance music with heavy ragtime sensibility. The record from which this was sampled had not been played very often and only needed a quick crackle filter to be essentially noise-free.
