"Rosetime And You"

by Zez Confrey and his Orchestra

Ragtime composer and pre-Jazz-era bandleader Zez Confrey, best known for the timeless Ragtime piece "Kitten on the Keys", is heard here on one of his later sides. His playing, still quite amazing, is almost overshadowed by a showy arrangement which includes a full string section as well as brass instruments. The tune was written by C. Luckeyth "Lucky" Roberts (the piano player behind Moran and Mack's famous "Two Black Crows" recordings) and Alex Rogers (who co-wrote the Bert Williams classics "Nobody" and "Why Adam Sinned") for the Broadway musical "Go Go" which ran for three months in the Spring of 1923. Zez recorded this for Victor on June 4 of that year, using their late-generation acoustic recording equipment, and this side is a real credit to the Victor engineers - there is a nice bass response here that one doesn't expect from an acoustic side. The record had been played a bit, but not too badly, allowing for standard noise reduction to take the harshness out and allow the music to be enjoyed once more.
