"Open Your Arms My Alabamy"

by Kaplan's Melodists

George W. Meyer, who gave us such classics as "For Me and My Gal" and "Ish Ga Bibble (I Should Worry)", penned the music to this now-obscure song in 1922. The lyrics were written by Sam Lewis and Joe Young, the same pair that wrote lyrics for "If I Knock the L out of Kelly" and the Al Jolson classic "My Mammy". It was a minor hit at the time, and the major labels had at least one version of it in their catalog - the Shannon Four recorded a vocal version for Columbia, and Bailey's Lucky Seven waxed it for Gennett. Dave Kaplan had his band record the song for Edison Labs on December 28th of '22, and it was released on both cylinder and disc. This is take "C", a bit more spirited than the commonly found take "A", and the duet between the snare drum and banjo toward the end gets quite lively. The disc from which this was sampled had been played, but not to death, and noise reduction took care of all but the worst wear noises.
