"You Took Advantage of Me"

by Sam Lanin and his Troubadours

This evergreen standard tune, by composers Richard Rogers and Lorenz Hart, premiered in the musical "Present Arms" which played 155 performances on Broadway starting in April of 1928 (see the IBDB for more details). The song was more recently covered by Linda Ronstadt in the 80s. Here is one of the versions recorded when the tune was fresh and being heard for the first time: Sam Lanin recorded this with his band on June 26 of 1928 and it was released on both the Cameo and Romeo labels. The vocalist is uncredited though it is probably Sam himself. The arrangement is very conservative, with no solos taken, but it hangs together nicely. The disc itself had been played on a phono with a sticking tone-arm, so one groove near the end had lots of wear on it, but the rest of it only needed some groove hiss attenuated with odd clicks or pops removed.
