"All That I Need Is You"

by Lanin's Famous Players

Bandleader Sam Lanin got around in the early 20s, recording for everybody who had a studio. This was a side his band made for Gennett in March of 1922 of a tune written by Lester Santley (mostly famous for co-writing "I'm Nobody's Baby") and Abel Baer (co-writer of "June Night" and "Lucky Lindy"). The arrangement starts interestingly with a chorous of muted trumpets, a sound ahead of its time, and features the musical tickling of Harry Reser on banjo. The standard late Ragtime dance orchestra sound, that is the establishment of the melody then quieting down for a solo instrument then roaring back for a finale, takes some interesting turns here. The recording was quite good, and though there was a fair amount of needle wear on the record it cleaned up well with standard noise reduction.
