"The Wreck of the Southern Old 97"

by Vernon Dalhart

The Victor and the Edison version of this recording have been on the web for some time now, but this is the seldom-heard version recorded for Herwin (a regional label in St. Louis Missouri). I'm not sure of the recording date, as there doesn't seem to be much research material on the web about this label, but late 1925 would be a good guess. It was originally thought that this was an acoustic recording, since the static on this disc didn't let much of the music through, but during the process of noise treatment it was found to be an early electric. Lots of noise has been removed from this badly-treated disc. To keep the music from being drowned out in the noise filters, the noise level has been reduced but not eliminated. (More about Vernon Dalhart can be found at Robert Morritt's impressive web site.)
