"Let's Wander Away"

by the Ponce Sisters

Ethel and Dorothea Ponce recorded for many labels, Columbia mostly (their most famous session being with Eddie Lang and Joe Venuti in the early 30s), but they made some sides for Edison disc as well. This is the second one they recorded for them, on October 27 of 1925, with simple piano accompaniment provided by Dave Kaplan (the man behind "Kaplan's Melodists" and the accompanist on many Happiness Boys discs). The tune was written by a trio of bandleaders of the period: Earl Burtnett (led the "Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel Orchestra" and also co-wrote "Little White Lies"), Paul Ash (led the "Granada Orchestra", co-wrote "Just Once Again"), and Harry Owens (leader of the "Royal Hawaiians", wrote "Sweet Leilani"). It was also recorded by Nathan Glantz for Gennett and Fred Waring for Victor. It is a fairly typical "wooing" song of the period - very popular in Vaudeville. It's a charming performance, with the sisters' trademark emotional detachment evident even on this early recording. The record itself has some rumble in the beginning which quickly passes off, and what few sratches there were only showed up at the very end, which made for easy noise reduction.
