"That's Georgia"

by the Merry Sparklers

The "fox trot and song" concept at Edison Labs matured by September 16 of 1924 when this side was recorded: instead of two distinct performances, seperated by two seconds of silence, the band modulated through a key change and the vocal version began without a tempo break. This song, written by Haven Gillespie (who gave us the lyrics for the seasonal evergreen "Santa Claus is Coming to Town"), George A. Little (co-wrote "So Tired" and "Hawaiian Butterfly") and Larry Shay (co-wrote "You're in Kentucky Sure as You're Born" with Gillespie and "By the Light of the Stars" with Little), is given a royal workout here. The instrumental part, with the Busse-style trumpet lead, is the highlight of the disc and could have stood on its own. Ed Smalle, who was normally heard singin duets with Johnny Marvin, teams up with Vernon Dalhart here for a surprisingly memorable vocal rendition. The disc itself was quite nice and only needed the minimum treatment for noise.
