"How I Love That Girl"

by Polla's Clover Gardens Orchestra

Ted FioRito and Gus Kahn (who together also co-wrote "Oh! Mabel" and "Charley My Boy") wrote this song in late 1924. Ruth Etting made it a hit less than a month later, and other versions began to pop up on other labels. This spritely dance version was waxed for Edison Labs on January 21 of 1925 - it was one of the sides that Edison produced that was labelled "Fox Trot and Song" - the first two minutes are instrumental, then the second two feature the vocalist. W.C. Polla, who led one of the better bands to record for Edison, leads his band in a joyous romp that lasts just four minutes. Vernon Dalhart, shedding his country accent just long enough to sing the vocal chorous here, barely keeps up with the pace of the tune. The record from which this was sampled was in great shape, needing only a light once-over to tame disc rumble.
