"Stack O' Barley"

by John J. Kimmel

On August 10 of 1922, accordionist John Kimmel recorded some jigs and reels for Edison Labs. This one was released on both disc and cylinder. Accordion solos are an acquired taste, as are reels, but this one has a nice haunting quality to the melody line. Kimmel's dexterity on the instrument is deceptively fluid, making complicated flourishes seem easy, and as always the Edison recording is brilliant for an acoustic disc. The record from which this was sampled hadn't been played very hard in its life so noise reduction was used very lightly.
