"It's Only Me in my Nightie"

by Dorothy Kingsley

This is not the screenwriter from the fifties, but rather an obscure Vaudeville performer who recorded for many companies in 1908 and '09 and promptly faded into obscurity. Those familiar with the work of Ada Jones will hear a similarity. The song, a properly Victorian morality tale for parents who dare to quarrel while they have small children in the house, was written by J. Fred Helf ("Please Mr. Conductor Don't Put Me Off This Train") and Arthur Lamb ("Asleep in the Deep"). This rendition was recorded for Columbia Indestructible cylinder sometime around September of 1908. While there is some flutter, as usually happens with the early celluloid cylinders, the surface was in remarkably good condition and didn't need much noise reduction other than rumble removal.
