Shelton Brooks' 1910 chestnut, always associated with Sophie Tucker, gets an interesting treatment here from Eddie Peabody in June of 1927. Long before he became a fixture on the Lawrence Welk TV show, Eddie was already a performing sensation on stage and radio, well-known for his banjo accumen. This recording (for the Perfect label) is unique as he plays first the "banjoline" and then switches to the "mando-cello" for a short while. The piano player is anonymous, but is no slouch. The record has a slight warp at the edge which makes rumbling sounds for the first twenty seconds or so, then it smooths out to be a very listenable example. (Sophie Tucker's recording of this song, as well as an excerpt from her autobiography, are on-line at the Museum of San Francisco web site, a tribute to Eddie Peabody can be found at the web site of John Wilder, and a movie clip of Eddie performing "St. Louis Blues" in 1932 can be found at David Garrick's web site.) |
