"The Prisoner's Song"

by Eddie Peabody and his Orchestra

With Eddie switching to guitar from his standard banjo, as he liked to do anyway (sometimes changing instruments in the middle of a number), he proves that even dance orchestras were performing this song in late 1925: As "Yes We Had No Bananas" had been in 1922, so this song was to be in its time. This was recorded for the Plaza Record Group, on October 22 of 1925, and was released on both the Regal and Domino labels: this is from the Domino pressing. Vernon Dalhart puts in a cameo appearance at the beginning of the side, doing one verse only, with Eddie backing him up on guitar. The full orchestra then performs the tune, sounding more like the Guy Lombardo band than anything else, but doing a workmanlike job of performing a tune that everybody wanted to hear. The record from which this was sampled had been played very little, maybe once, so hardly any noise reduction was needed.
