This is one of the first sister groups. Most of their records for Edison were recorded in 1927 and '28 - this is their first, recorded on November 8 of 1922. Lou Handman, remembered most as the author of "Are You Lonesome Tonight", took a stab at writing a
blues song. Lucille Hegamin sang it to good effect for Arto, and instrumental versions were recorded by Ted Lewis for Columbia (sample is on-line at the Red Hot Jazz Archive) and the
Virginians for Victor (also on-line at the Red Hot Jazz Archive). The Dennis Sisters' version is interesting - not genuine, certainly, as this record sounds very much like white
people singing (conservative Edison would not tolerate much else). That said, this performance has a quirky charm about it that stands up to repeated listening. The record itself was in very nice condition and only needed a little noise reduction to lighten the
rumble.
