"Rufus on the Old Kent Road"

by Rae Eleanor Ball

Most of Rae Ball's records for Edison were light classical "dinner music", musically uninteresting but apparently sold quite well in their time, but this ditty is a delightful exception, waxed for Edison Labs on September 21 of 1923. It is a joyous recording, played with a capricious spirit, and is downright infectious. Rae takes the composer's credit for this, but astute observers will note a combination of traditional jigs along with a brief melodic quote from "Dear Old Southland," a popular song at the time. I don't know if Ms. Ball recorded any more tunes like this, but I don't think she did (email to the contrary is welcome). The surface of this Edison disc was in good condition, needing only the occasional click (and disc rumble) removed.
