This merry recording, from September 8 of 1923, was part of Edison Labs' ongoing project with Edison's good friend Henry Ford to record champion fiddlers and therefore preserve the art form. There were quite a few good country fiddle tunes recorded while this project
was ongoing, and with such fidelity that was impossible for any other label at the time. Baltzell was from Mt. Vernon, Ohio, and recorded for Edison and Okeh. This was one of his earlier records, and it is take "B" rather than the more common take "C". The surface
condition was like new, needing only the removal of a few clicks and pops. (More info can be found on "The Fiddler's Companion" web site, which mentions Baltzell in passing as well as one of
the tunes contained in this particular quadrille - another one of Baltzell's records can be heard on the June 1 '04 broadcast of the Thomas Edison's Attic radio show.)
