"Rosy Cheeks"

by Lane's Dance Orchestra

This song bears more than a passing resemblence to the mid-20s classic tune "Baby Face" written by Harry Akst and Benny Davis (which can be heard on Ben Selvin's page over at the "Red Hot Jazz Archive"). Seymour Simons (later co-wrote the classic "All Of Me") and Richard A. Whiting (responsile for such evergreens as "She's Funny That Way" and "Sleepy Time Gal") penned this near-duplicate in 1927. This version, issued on Lincoln, was recorded on June 19 of that year. The same master was also issued on Romeo and Cameo, each giving credit to a different orchestra - Romeo's label shows Lynn Cowan as being the bandleader, and Cameo credits Bob Haring - so the actual baton-waver is in doubt. It's a good chart, well played, with anonymous vocals and a good punchy trumpet solo that sounds like it could be Red Nichols or Earl Oliver. This particular record got played a lot, on some rather harsh equipment, but after processing it came out sounding pretty good except for the wear noises here and there.
