"The Oceana Roll"

by Eddie Morton

Sheet Music Cover courtesy of ParlorSongs.com Written by Roger Lewis (words) & Lucien Denni (music) in 1911, this song became an immediate favorite with audiences in America and Europe. It was sure to get a response no matter who sang it. And few sang it better than Eddie Morton, an early vaudeville legend who turns in a delightfully spontaneous performance for Victor. By the time this was issued, Victor was starting to use good shellac and the surface is quite clean compared to earlier examples. Some wear on the loud passages, but then you'd expect that for such a favorite. (Archeophone has issued the first volume of Eddie Morton recordings on CD, which are splendid quality as you'd expect, and until the second volume is issued you can listen to this sample here. Also, lyrics for this song have been thoughtfully provided on-line by "Keeper's Second Home Page".)
