"Queen of Egypt"

by Abe Lyman's California Ambassador Hotel Orchestra

This record is more famous for its B-side, the first recording of the jazz classic "Bugle Call Rag" which Benny Goodman would re-make into a swing standard thirteen years later. This was the A-side of that record, recorded for Brunswick on August 6 of 1923, which may have found some favor at the time but faded quickly into obscurity. The arrangement gives a typical early 20s nod to Arabic motifs, popular beginning with Rudolph Valentino's silent film portrayal of "The Sheik" in 1921 and the discovery of Tut's tomb in the following year. Lyman's orchestra gives this tune a conservative arrangement, playing without much of its trademark lively feel until the last minute. The disc itself was in very good condition and only needed some minor noise reduction treatment. (The B-side, "Bugle Call Rag", can be purchased on CD at Timeless Records and further reading about Lyman's band can be found at "RedHotJazz.com".)
