"Paradise Alley"

by Harry Raderman and his Orchestra

In March of 1924, a musical called "Paradise Alley" opened to a two-month run at the Casino Theater on New York's Broadway. Songwriters Harry Archer (wrote music for many Broadway shows including "Just a Minute" and "Sweet and Low"), Dorian Otvos (from Hungary, was also involved in "George's White Scandals of 1936"), and Carle Carlton (also staged and directed this particular show) wrote the song, and it was covered by many hotel dance bands in early 1924. Harry Raderman's band made this very nice version for Edison Labs on May 28 of that year. Arthur Hall handles the vocal in the second half of this recording, one of Edison's attempts at putting an instrumental and vocal version of a tune on the same side, which worked pretty well in this case. The record had been played with the wrong equipment at some point in its life, so there were wear noises, but noise reduction tempered those to the point where it is very listenable.
