"Papa Better Watch Your Step"

by Kaplan's Melodists

Dave Kaplan was the head arranger and A&R man for Edison Labs, responsible for skating the thin line between satisfying Thomas Edison's personal taste and making records that would sell decently. This is one time he took his own house-band one step over the "hot" line: judging from the red star on the record label (which meant "customer cannot return this record"), Edison had serious reservations about issuing this side. It is a nice one, though, and certainly is more raucus than the usual Kaplan arrangement. The tune had been written by Gilbert Wells (co-authored many songs from "Wee Hoose Mang the Heather" in 1912 to "Red Hot Mama" in 1924) and Bud Cooper (co-wrote "My Gal" and "Mama's Gonna Slow You Down") in early 1923, and recorded for Edison on May 3 of that year. The band starts out a little stiff but they loosen up well toward the end. The record itself was in great condition, needing noise reduction only for the rumble of the disc surface.
