Felix Arndt's classic exercise in "fingerbustin'" (slang, meaning ivory fireworks) has been recorded many times, but this version from December 11, 1924 holds special charm. The Dixie Daisies,
a pseudonym for Paul Van Loan's orchestra, recorded most often as a backup band for blues singer Lucille Hegamin (Cameo's answer to Mamie Smith), but they recorded this side without her. Listen especially for
the "mystery noise" (about two minutes into the record) - what might sound like someone talking through a saxophone is probably a trumpet mute held inside the hand. |
