"Take, Oh Take Those Lips Away"

by the California Entertainers

Not much is known about this fly-by-night group of musicians who did three sides for Edison Labs and then vanished. This one, recorded on December 14 of 1923, was written by Harry Tierney and Joseph MacCarthy (the same pair that wrote "Rio Rita" and "My Baby's Arms" for the Zigfeld Follies). The group gets off to a shaky start, particularly the trumpet in the beginning, though they wind up putting in a decent performance. The fidelity of the recording was magnificent, even by Edison Labs standards, and the surface of this particular disc was in good enough shape to not interfere.
