"Oh Lady Be Good"

by the California Ramblers

You've probably heard this tune a thousand times - this is how it sounded when it was first introduced, recorded by one of the more prolific bands to record acoustic-era dance music. This band, with their distinct blend of commercialism and jazz sensibility, have become the stuff of legend. As this side shows, they would start a number fairly conservatively and then start to kick it around - by the end of the number they were having a great time. They recorded this Gershwin evergreen song on January 28, 1925, at the Columbia studios. This particular side got played a fair amount, and there's groove stress to prove it, but after being cleaned up it sounds decent once again. (More samples of the California Ramblers, and a bio, can be found at the Red Hot Jazz Archive.)
