"I Like The Hat, I Like The Dress"

by Edward M. Favor

This amusing song, about a lovestruck showgoer's "reality adjustment" upon seeing the object of his crush after the show was over, was written by S.R. Henry (co-author of "The Colored Major" and "Indianola") in early 1911. There may have been other recordings of this song, but this one - made by recording pioneer Edward M. Favor at Edison Labs in June of 1911 - is the only one of which I've found any trace. Ideally suited for a soft-shoe routine toward the end, it's interesting that this recording does not feature that. This was one of Ed's final recordings for any company, though he sounds as good here as on any of his earlier waxings. The quartet behind him is the Premier Quartet with the ever-recognizable Billy Murray singing lead (the other voices were William F. Hooley, John Beiling, and Steve Porter). The 4-minute wax Amberol cylinder from which this was sampled was very clean, needing only hiss and rumble removal.
