"Little Brown Jug"

by the Blue Ridge Duo

Gene Austin, later known for his crooning for Victor ("My Blue Heaven" and "Ramona" were huge sellers), made some acoustic records for Edison in September of 1924. With George Reneau on the harmonica, they made eight sides for Edison Labs between September 22 and 24 of that year, with this one being made on the 23rd and was issued on both cylinder and disc. Once one gets past the fact that Gene is plainly not a hillbilly, as he would prove later for Victor, this is actually a pretty good recording. The disc from which this was sampled played better than it looked; some surface noise was ably reduced and rumble attenuated.
