"Make A Noise Like A Hoop (And Roll Away)"

by Fred Duprez

Sheet Music Cover courtesy of the Lester Levy Collection This mischievous song, with a distinctly modern twist to the lyric, was written in 1908 by Ren Shields (who co-wrote "Waltz Me Around Again Willie") and J. Fred Helf (who co-wrote "Please Mister Conductor, Don't Put Me Off This Train" and "Afloat on a Five Dollar Note"). Fred Duprez, who would deliver the monolog "Happy Tho Married" a few years later, recorded this song for Columbia in 1908 on both disc and cylinder. This is the 2-minute cylinder recording, issued on Oxford Indestructible. This song seems to suit Fred's brusque delivery perfectly. The cylinder has a slightly warped surface, so some flutter is introduced, but is in very good shape other than that. It didn't take much noise reduction work to make it presentable.
