Cliff Friend (who also gave us "You Tell Her - I Stutter" and "Then I'll Be Happy") wrote this tune in late 1926. It was featured in the now-forgotten 1927 movie "The Hostess" It bears more than casual resemblence in title to the
classic "Bye Bye Blackbird" (contemporary to this tune, written only a few months before, which can be heard at Aardvark Mastering). Dave Kaplan and his
merry band of anonymous musicians turn in a good performance here, augmented by various musical puns having to do with birds, and the recording quality (as is typical at Edison labs) is first-rate. This was waxed on December 10 of
1926, also released on a cylinder, and was one of three versions of this song that Edison released (Vaughn deLeath did a vocal version, and Fredrick Kinsley made a Midmer-Losh pipe-organ recording). There were some surface irregularities,
making rumble more of a problem, but rolling off some bass took care of that.
