"Oh! Harold"

by Zez Confrey and his Orchestra

One of Zez's later recordings, with his orchestra showing some heavy polish denoting a hotel band of some serious repute. Zez and the boys recorded this side for Victor on June 4 of 1923, representing the last gasp of orchestrated Ragtime as the "jazz age" began to gather steam. The patrons who danced to Confrey's syncopation probably had no idea what musical revolution lay just ahead. There are no solos per se, as is typical with Confrey's records, but Zez himself does take an interesting piano break toward the end. The record from which this was sampled was in very good shape, having been played but not too much, and responded well to standard noise treatment.
