"Don't Fail Me Dice"

by Al Bernard

With his most successful recordings behind him, and his star fading, Al made a vaiant attempt at recreating an earlier success with this snazzy little number. It is basically an updated version of his earlier hit "Read 'Em and Weep", which is also posted in these very archives. Al wrote it with Sam H. Stept (famous for co-writing "Please Don't Talk About Me When I'm Gone" and "I'll Always Be In Love With You"). He seems to have only recorded it once, for Harmony on June 14 of 1926, and it (undeservedly) passed into obscurity pretty fast. It's a great tune, with catchy lyrics and lots of rhythm, though its "minstrel show" sensibility (already dated by 1926) seems to have doomed it. The record from which this sample is taken was only played once and put away, and as a consequence is very smooth and noise-free. The acoustic equipment used to record it was remarkably good. A little bit of crackle and rumble removal was all that was necessary.
