"Read 'em and Weep"

by Al Bernard

Al co-wrote this song with Carl Fenton (real name Gus Hanschen) in 1920, successfully introduced it in the Broadway show, "Come Seven", and proceeded to record it for every label in existence. This is the version he recorded for Pathe. Up to this point in Vaudeville there weren't many songs about back-alley gambling, but times were changing fast. The recording itself is true enough that the "bite" of the trumpets comes through - extraordinary for an acoustic disc. (Lyrics to this song have been provided on-line by "PDMusic", and there's brief bio at the "Turtle's Jukebox".)
