"Ach, Wie Ist's Möglich Dann"

by the Nebe Quartet

There's a simple elegance about the presentation of this traditional German tune that will send a shiver up your spine, whether you understand the language or not, and all the more if you do understand it. This was recorded in Berlin in March of 1910 for a two-minute cylinder. Carl Nebe, the bass singer from whom this quartet takes its name, had died a year or so before this recording was made. The personnel is not known, but they sing very well together. The cylinder itself is in very good shape, needing only a few clicks and pops removed and a minor attenuation of the "hiss" in the groove. (More examples of this quartet's recorded work can be found at the UCSB Special Collection.)
