"Cocoanut Dance"

by Vess L. Ossman

This banjo specialty was in Edison's catalog right up into the 20's, when it was re-recorded to Diamond Disc. This is the original 2-minute cylinder version, recorded circa 1898, back when Vess could still do the complex fingering without help from another instrument. It's a bouncy little tune, guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The surface is a little rough, but that's understandable given its age. Still delightful over a hundred years later. (More recordings by Ossman can be found at the UCSB Special Collection.)
