One of the more unusual records that Vernon recorded during the height of his popularity as a Country singer, this was written by Guy Massey (who wrote "The Prisoner's Song" to worldwide acclaim). It was the sort of song
that Josh White would put on wax for Columbia in 1939 - his eight-side set of Chain Gang songs sold fairly well - but here's Vernon doing it fourteen years before that, in 1925, March 17 to be exact. Thankfully he doesn't
over-dramatize this, or make a caricature of it as earlier white recording pioneers might do (think Arthur Collins). The guitar backup, uncredited but likely the work of Carson Robison, is simple and sensitive. Edison Labs
issued this on both disc and cylinder, with this being a sample of the disc issue, and the surface was in very nice condition only requiring rumble removal.
