A recording pioneer from the British side of the pond, Harry Bluff specialized in recording the Music Hall specialities of other performers (always giving them credit for the original performance in the spoken announcement,
as he does on this record for Music Hall performer George Robey). The fidelity on this 2-minute Edison Bell wax cylinder, recorded in October of 1905, is remarkable with a good deal more bass response than their American
counterpart. Harry's performance here is spirited, combining an introductory song and monolog with a song to finish, and the character is enough of a rascal to seem humorous even over a hundred years later. The cylinder
had some slight mold spots, making occasional noise, but the recording was loud and clear enough that this was a minor problem.
