This is one of three songs about drunken husbands on a spree written by Harry Williams and Egbert Anson Vanalstyne. The other two songs were "I'm Afraid To Come Home In The Dark" in 1908, and the sequal "I Used To Be Afraid To Come Home In The Dark" in 1909. (Both can be heard on-line at "Tinfoil.com"). Billy Murray sang all three of them, and he recorded this one on a Columbia cylinder in 1908 - this is the Oxford Indestructible version, sold through Sears' catalog. This particular copy was quite worn, so it took some work with noise reduction to make it more listenable. (A bio about the authors can be found at "nfo.net", and another interesting detail - his song was given new lyrics by Joe Hill for the Labor Movement - see the page about "Mister Block" for details.) |
