The songwriter who would give us the classics "I Can Dream, Can't I" and "I'm Late, I'm Late (for a Very Important Date)" was part of a singing duo called "Fain and Dunn" in the early days of radio (more details can be found
at the "Songwriters Hall of Fame"). Here he is as a solo performer, recorded on July 16 of 1929, singing a song that had just been published:
Thomas "Fats" Waller, Harry Brooks, and Andy Razaf had written a tune that would be performed constantly for the next fifty years and beyond, and here is one of the first renditions of it. This side would be issued on both
Harmony and Velvetone labels. Sammy's songwriting career was long and very productive, and while his time as a singer is not a high point in his professional life he actually doesn't do half bad here. The record had been played
quite a lot but a good sample came out of the end after being treated for crackle.
