On 30th of December in 1908, Billy Murray stood in front of a horn in the Victor studios to record this hit of the day, written by a very young Gus Kahn and Grace leBoy (later known as Mrs. Gus Kahn) the previous year. Manuel
Romain recorded a version for Edison, Harry Tally made a recording of it for Columbia, and the song had a brief nostalgic revival in the movie "I'll See You In My Dreams" (with Doris Day in 1952). Murray is in good form here, selling
the tune without going overboard with it. Incidentally, when Walter Van Brunt auditioned for Edison Records a few years after this, he imitated Billy's performance on this tune and he passed the audition (Thanks to Rocky for passing
that information along). This particular disc had been treated roughly, and nearly didn't provide a decent sample, but one particular needle got a decent part of the groove and noise reduction made it more listenable.
Until I find a better copy, this will certainly do.
