A personal favorite from the first time I was aware of cylinder phonographs (about the age of five). This one got played a lot, but thankfully with a good machine so there's minimal wear. This song, with words by Thomas S. Allen and music by Joseph M. Daly, is a fairly typical "Coon Song" of the pre-World War One period, performed for Edison in 1913 by Ed Meeker (and an unidentified second person - possibly Len Spencer or Frank Stanley). The dog fight toward the end sets this charming performance apart - most other skits of the period would have a monolog before the final chorous. A thoroughly entertaining little record. (An alternate take of this performance can be heard on-line at the UCSB Special Collection.) |
