"Give Me a Ukulele (and a Ukulele Baby) And Leave the Rest to Me"

by the National Male Quartet

In the wake of the song "Ukulele Lady", Richard Whiting's runaway hit in 1925 covered by Frank Crumit among many others (Frank's inspired version has been reissued over at "Naxos"), songs with word "ukulele" in the title flourished for a couple of years. This was one of them, a hit in its own right, recorded on November 1 of the following year by Edison Labs. Lew Brown (prolific writer of such hits as "Shine" and "Birth of the Blues") and Gene Williams (who seems to be known for this song and the tune "Wyoming") wrote it, and the song was recorded many times by as many labels (Irving Aaronson's version on Victor can be heard over at "Red Hot Jazz Archive"). This version is jovial, with the arrangement owing more to the Revellers than traditional barbershop harmonies. The surface was excellent, only needing rumble and occasional clicks removed.
