"Sweet Love"

by Lenzberg's Riverside Orchestra

Julius Lenzberg was a native of Baltimore, published two marches before he was twenty, and directed pit bands for vaudeville houses for most of his professional career (see "perfessorbill.com" for more information). His ragtime compositions include "Merry Whirl," "Razzle-Dazzle," and "Haunting Rag." Most of his recorded output came from 1919 to 1921, for Edison and Pathé, and very little after that. This tune, written by Ed Smalle (the same guy who played piano for the Revelers in the mid 20s and also sang duets with Johnny Marvin), was recorded by Lenzberg's band on December 28 of 1920. The recording is nice on the high end, with the cymbols on the drums coming through exceptionally well. The disc that provided the sample was visually in nice shape but had some issues with crackle. Running the sample through clickRepair has brought out more of the music.
