Zez Confrey's biggest hit in the early 20s, judging from the number of recordings from that period. One of several cover versions made, this was waxed at Edison Labs on May 25 of 1922. One week earlier, the Atlantic Dance
Orchestra made a recording of it that was held and never released by Edison. This was the version they liked enough to issue, and it can be found on both cylinder and disc. The performance is conservative, since the "old man"
was still listening, but the real star of the show is the recording itself: brighter than most Edison waxings before or after, this was a product of some beneficient experimentation. The "bite" of the trumpet wouldn't sound quite
this good even on some electric recordings. The disc that yielded this sample had been played a lot so there was some wear and scratches to contend with. They have been smoothed out for your listening pleasure.
