An entertaining example of what was considered risqué at the turn of the last century, this Victorian "naughty song" is about a demure young girl discovering the world and whose "kid brother" keeps reporting her activities to Father. Baritone
Samuel H. Dudley, who went by his initials of S.H., could usually be found singing with the Haydn Quartet on Victor. This Edison 2-minute cylinder has had some mold damage, but the voice is still understandable and the song is worth hearing. So, after
treating the heaviest damage in the sample, I'm presenting this immensely improved record. (There were actually TWO S.H. Dudleys: the white one, heard here, who is given a thumbnail bio at
Mainspring Press; and a black one, Sherman H. Dudley, who was quite a legendary figure in his day - he was a stage performer, started the Colored Actors Union, and developed
the first black theater circuit - see the University of Texas website to read about him.)
