"Sevillanas"

by Lola La Flamenca

One of only seven recordings that this obscure Spanish performer ever made, this spirited rendering of a popular tune from Andalucia was waxed for Edison Labs in 1910. It's proof that some of the "ethnic" recordings that these early record manufacturers made, in small batches for particular audiences, can yield some interesting and quite engaging performances. The 4-minute cylinder from which this was sampled was well cared for, though it had been played enough to introduce some wear into the louder notes. A once-over-lightly with noise reduction was all that was necessary. (Another performance by Lola, "Guajiras Españoles", can be heard at the "City of London Phonograph and Gramophone Society".)
