"Sam The Old Accordion Man"

by the McAlpin Dance Orchestra

Sheet Music Cover courtesy of Ruby Lane Antiques A huge hit in its time, played by every dance band through early 1927, this now-obscure tune is given a rousing rendition by this now-obscure band. Walter Donaldson, who co-wrote "How Ya Gonna Keep 'Em Down On The Farm" and "My Blue Heaven", penned this one in late 1926. The label suggests that this was Ernie Golden's McAlpin Orchestra who recorded it in January of 1927 (that band, as their name suggests, played at the Hotel McAlpin in New York at Broadway and 34th Street). The band's sound, however, is very similar to Adrian Shubert's orchestra who recorded very frequently for Romeo and the other dime-store labels. Whichever band it actually is, their personnel is unknown - even the vocalist is uncredited (sounds like Irving Kaufman to my ear) - though the accordion player, who is likely Charles Magnante (thanks to "Fredrik" for that information) does a decent job of attempting to play hot. The surface was a bit crackly, but that cleaned up well and despite the "early electric" distortion this record sounds very nice indeed.
