"Persiflage"

by Fred Van Epps

One of the original recording pioneers, active through the 1900s, Fred Van Epps returned to Edison Labs in the 20s. He was still an amazing banjo player and, while some numbers from his 20s sessions (such as this record's flip side, "The New Gaiety", or his remake of Vess Ossman's cylinder recording of "Cocoanut Dance") reveal some problems with complicated passages, this side shows that his chops were still very impressive. He'd recorded this number at least once before, on a Columbia disc in 1920, but this version was waxed at Edison Labs on May 29 of 1925. It was issued on both disc and cylinder. The disc this was sampled from had hardly been played, though some water damage at the outer edge made for a rough surface, and attenuating the rumble with some filters made for a very enjoyable performance.
