"Humoreska (Kocian)"

by Vasa Prihoda

One of the old-world masters of the violin, well-regarded then but largely forgotten now, Edison Labs got this Czechslovakian wunderkind into their studio to record some sides for Diamond Disc. This was one, issued in the "light classical" series, recorded on February 15 of 1921 when Vasa, himself, was barely 21 years of age. The piece he is playing should not be confused with the commonly-heard "Humoresque" that Dvorak composed; this is a more obscure one (undeservedly obscure, I might add) written by Jaroslav Kocian, a composer who also came from Czechslovakia. It is light-hearted and more fun than Classical is supposed to be. The surface of the disc, despite having been played more than a few times, was in good shape and mostly needed surface rumble tamed.
