"The Hoodoo Man"

by the Atlantic Dance Orchestra

An interesting danceable "mood piece" from the house orchestra at Edison Labs, recorded on April 23, 1924. Nacio Herb Brown (co-author of "Singin' In The Rain" and "You Stepped Out Of A Dream") wrote this one, and though it wasn't hugely popular its beguiling mesmerism is undeniable. Most of the personnel in this band is unknown, except for the leader Louis Katzman on trumpet, who is the only one to take any real liberties with his solo time. It's a pleasant rendition, though very white, and (as usual with Edison Labs) recorded beautifully. This particular copy was treated well, and was played with good equipment, so there is no wear evident. All this one needed was some rumble removal and it was good to go.
